A Downton Abbey actor was one of hundreds of people to descend on The Rye for a bank holiday family favourite yesterday.

Celebrity guest Peter Egan, who has starred in films like Chariots of Fire and Death at a Funeral, as well as playing Shrimpy, the Marquess of Flintshire, in the ITV period drama, officially opened the May Fayre on Monday afternoon.

The actor was joined by town mayor, councillor Mohammed Hanif, and Wycombe MP Steve Baker for the day of fun.

The annual bank holiday extravaganza, which has been opened by a number of other celebrities in the past, was a big hit once again this year, as families watched the many events in the sunshine.

The town event is held on The Rye every year and acts as a showcase event for the month-long Wycombe Arts Festival.

It is organised by St Augustine’s Catholic Church, based in Amersham Hill, with organisers raising about £16,000 from the fun-filled event last year alone.

This year's fundraising total has not yet been announced.
