A south Bucks man will walk a mammoth 111 miles in December to raise awareness of a rare genetic condition.

Sven Tonks, 34, who lives in High Wycombe and is originally from Wolverhampton, is planning on doing the epic walk from High Wycombe to Wolverhampton in order to raise awareness of Trisomy 13, a rare genetic disorder that can cause multiple and complex organ defects in children.

The father-of-two said he is doing the walk in tribute to Ivory Quintyne, the son of close family friends who suffers from the condition. When Ivory was born, he was given an hour to live – he has just celebrated his second birthday.

Sven said: “Ivory is my inspiration for the walk. He has endured many operations in his short life to help him on the way and I’d like to give him a little helping hand on his journey.”

He is hoping to get players from Wolverhampton Wanderers FC to complete the last five miles of the walk, finishing at Molineux Stadium, home of the club.

Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes in all or most cells, making a total of 46 chromosomes. According to support organisation Soft UK, Trisomy 13 is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra chromosome in the body’s cells, and can cause developmental delays and organ defects in affected children.

In the UK, around 1 in 200 births result in a baby with a chromosome defect, according to the organisation.

Sven trains hard at his gym in Cressex Park with personal trainer Beth Brennan every day, and has already raised 60 per cent of his £1,000 target.
