A 500-strong crowd turned out to meet two GB athletes at a High Wycombe school’s spring fair on Saturday.

Silver medallist Dr Lena Poulton officially opened the Royal Grammar School Parents’ Association spring fair. GB hockey midfielder Ian Sloan did the raffle draw and showed off his skills with the Wycombe Hockey Club on the school’s pitch.

Dr Poulton, whose two sons attend the school, said she was delighted to see so many young people keen to view her silver medal from the World Triathlon Championships and bronze medal from the European Championships last year.

She said: “I hope young people can see what you can achieve, even with a busy lifestyle, if you are determined.”

Mr Sloan is part of the GB hockey squad and travelled to the World Hockey League finals in India last year.

Headmaster Philip Wayne said he was delighted to see school parents, students and the community supporting the school.

The fair raised more than £6,500 towards the refurbishment of the school’s 100-year-old classrooms.

Rupa Hindocha, Chair of the Parents’ Association said: “We are delighted with the funds raised and pleased that people enjoyed themselves at the fair.”
