Hospital campaigners have welcomed a planned £49 million revamp of Wexham Park’s A&E, but say ‘it’s now time to get ours back’ in High Wycombe.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the bosses at the Slough hospital – where many south Bucks residents go in an emergency– want a complete overhaul of its Accident and Emergency department.

Following the announcement, “exciting” plans to build the department and assessment centre at the hospital – which is a 14-mile journey along the M40 from Wycombe Hospital – will soon be on display.

Hand Back our Hospital campaigners have been calling for High Wycombe’s A&E to be returned for 10 years following the closure, but now welcome the proposed changes after admitting concerns over the future of Wexham Park Hospital.

Ozma Hafiz said: “It's great news that Wexham are keeping A&E services as at more than one stage we were worried about its future.

“Everyone deserves easily accessible, safe healthcare services and staff there have been rooting for us.”

She finished by saying: “Now to get ours back.”

The funding for the hospital has recently been announced by Wexham Park Hospital bosses the Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, a different group from Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust which runs the hospitals in Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville.

The proposed new emergency department would contain separate children’s and minor injuries units as well as 36 individual rooms for major injuries and a 34-bed combined assessment and ambulatory care centre.

If approved, construction work could start in spring 2017.
