A fire investigation is underway to discover how a blaze ripped through a BMW showroom in High Wycombe last night – damaging about 20 cars.

Emergency services raced to the London Road at 10pm, with more than 30 firefighters tackling the blaze inside the Sytner workshop, near Wycombe Retail Park.

Crews remained at the site for hours after the initial 999 call and earlier today confirmed the workshop and about 20 cars were damaged by fire, smoke and heat – and two were completely destroyed.

Investigators are now examining what started the blaze, whilst commending the teams on the ground for reducing the damage which they say could have been “significant”.

The showroom was visibly smoke-logged following the fire, with one eye-witness telling Bucks Free Press reporters at the scene: “There was so much smoke you would think the whole place was on fire.”

Bucks Fire and Rescue spokesman Fraser Pearson said: “The first crews to arrive quickly established that the fire was in the workshop to the rear of the premises.

“Although it had the potential to be a significant, established commercial property fire, it was quickly brought under control thanks to the rapid interventions and tactics adopted by the initial incident commander.

“About 20 vehicles were affected, of which two were destroyed by fire, two were damaged by heat and the remainder damaged by smoke only.”

He added: “Reinspections took place throughout the night and the last fire engine left at around 5am.

“An investigation into the cause of the fire is being carried out this morning.”

Bucks Free Press:

Seven fire engines were called out to the fire, with crews using three main jets, ten sets of breathing apparatus, thermal imaging cameras and positive pressure ventilation fans whilst attempting to extinguish the flames.

In total, three fire engines from High Wycombe attended the blaze alongside other crews from Marlow, Beaconsfield, Slough and Gerrards Cross, along with four officers.

Sytner bosses have now spoken out about the late night blaze, saying they will continue to help customers who may have been affected.

Andy Crossan, BMW Divisional Franchise Director for the Sytner Group, said: “The fire started at around 10 pm last night and so thankfully none of our employees or customers were on site.

“We are very grateful for the prompt response of the Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes Fire & Rescue Services which ensured that the damage was minimised.

“The fire was largely contained to a part of the workshop where two cars were unfortunately seriously damaged, fortunately though most of the building is largely unaffected.”

He added that the sales department and parts operations have been open for business as usual today and are working with nearby dealerships in Maidenhead and Slough to ensure any urgent service and repair matters can be dealt with.

Mr Crossan said: “We expect to be operating a limited workshop service after the weekend when the initial repairs are completed and be fully operational in due course.”

Anyone who was affected by the fire can call Sytner on this newly setup dedicated telephone number: 0116 245 6264.
