A former Marlow teacher who battled a type of cancer believed to be caused by asbestos has passed away.

Sue Stephens – who taught at two primary schools in the area– lost her battle with mesothelioma early on Sunday morning (June 26) with her family by her side.

The well-loved teacher, who taught more than 800 children in her 30 years of teaching in Bucks, believed her cancer was caused by exposure to asbestos in the workplace.

Her family launched a campaign calling on the government to act quickly and remove asbestos from all schools by 2028 and their petition to Nicky Morgan, secretary of state for education, has now amassed more than 3,800 signatures.

Her daughter Lucie said: “We will be continuing with the campaign in Mum’s memory, and aim for the removal of asbestos from schools to be part of her legacy.”
