Beaconsfield’s 17th annual donkey derby was hailed as a “great success” as the town came alive with the vibrant spirit of the Rio Olympics.
The popular family event returned to St Mary and All Saints School on Maxwell Road on June 25 and crowds flocked to see the star attraction – seven donkey races.
The animals were ridden bareback by brave ‘jockettes’ at half hour intervals throughout the day.
There were also Olympic Games inspired sports challenges, such as long jump, netball and golf as well as an Olympic torch parade opening ceremony.
Adults and children alike joined in with the tug of war, and youngsters enjoyed donkey rides, bouncy castles, stagecoach dance lessons, a find the donkey competition and a donkey hunt, as well as side shows and stalls.
Ian Andrew, from Beaconsfield Lions Club, said the day was a success, despite a downpour.
He said: “The Rio Olympic Sports Theme Games were very popular and the children had a great time testing their sporting skills. Everyone thought that the donkey racing was great fun and even more exciting during a rain shower.
“We were all very pleased with the turnout and the event will make a major contribution to St Mary and All Saints School and Beaconsfield Lions local charities.”
