Visitors to Wycombe Museum will be able to dress up and explore a trench as it hosts two events to commemorate the beginning of the Battle of the Somme.

First World War weapons, artefacts and uniforms will be on display during the free Tell Them of Us: Wycombe and the Somme event on Sunday.

There will be opportunities to dress up as a soldier or nurse, and explore the museum’s grounds with a periscope – including the museum’s reconstructed trench – before creating their own poppy of remembrance.

The Tell Them of Us: Costumed Cemetery Tour is also being held on the same day.

Tour-goers will be able to step back to a time when Wycombe families waited in trepidation for news from the battlefields of the Somme. Meet the soldiers and hear the stories of the townsfolk who contributed to the war effort at home.

The tour is researched and presented by historian Sally Scagell and pupils from John Hampden Grammar School and Wycombe Abbey. Tours leave from the museum in Priory Avenue every half an hour from 12.30pm until 3.30pm. Each tour lasts approximately 90 minutes.

People embarking on the tour are urged to wear suitable footwear. It costs £2, which includes a donation to the Royal British Legion.

The musical Of Heroic Hearts will also be premiered in High Wycombe on July 9 at All Saints Parish Church.

The show - which is written by Alan Garmonsway and Paul Cawte, and directed by John Timewell - marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and is being supported by Wycombe District Council.

Tickets cost £12 on a first-come first-served basis and are available from 01628 522854. All proceeds will be donated to the RBL’s Poppy Appeal.
