An eye care specialist from south Bucks who has worked with war veterans with sight loss will cycle from London to Paris to raise money for Blind Veterans UK.

Ranjit Sandhu, an ophthalmologist from Chalfont St Giles also fondly known as Binnie, is planning to cycle an epic 300 miles this month to raise money for the charity that has helped more than 35,000 blind veterans since it was founded during the First World War.

Ms Sandhu, who is a consultant at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, started cycling in March and decided she was going to do the bike ride for Blind Veterans UK after working with vision-impaired ex-servicemen and women at the charity’s London headquarters.

She said: “I had the opportunity to work with those veterans who have suffered sight loss by providing clinical and much required moral support at Blind Veterans UK.

“Meeting the veterans, both at the London office as well as the charity’s Buckingham Palace garden party last year, was inspirational and rewarding.

“It is wonderful to see the tremendous support offered by Blind Veterans UK for those who have devoted a lot of their time and effort for their country.”

Ms Sandhu will start at Crystal Palace in London tomorrow (Wednesday) and cycle through Kent before hitting the French countryside, including the Valley of Canche River and the Somme River.

She will finish in Paris at the Eiffel Tower and Seine River on Saturday.

She added: “I’m very much looking forward to it and can’t wait to finally wear my Blind Veterans UK cycling jersey.

“I hope the weather will hold up so we can enjoy the English and French countryside.”
