It was another record-breaking year for PennFest as 10,000 music fans flocked to Penn Street to enjoy the annual festival on Saturday.

The sun shone as the two-day family friendly festival kicked off on Friday with performances from Ms Dynamite, Reef, Fun’ Lovin’ Criminals, Shed Seven and De La Soul.

Nineties Brit-pop band Ocean Colour Scene also celebrated 20 years since their second album, Moseley Shoals, was released by playing the album in full to delighted crowds.

The glorious weather held out on Saturday as a record-breaking 10,000 people enjoyed sets from headliner Dizzee Rascal, Rizzle Kicks, The Lightning Seeds, Chas and Dave and Soul II Soul.

Happy Mondays’ front man Shaun Ryder also returned to PennFest this year – this time, with his band Black Grape.

PennFest organiser, Steve Haywood, said the crowds reached full capacity for the very first time on Saturday.

He said: “PennFest was great this year. We sold out on Saturday, we were at full capacity. It was a first for us – we nearly did it last year with the Happy Mondays but this time we really were fully sold out.

“The weather was also brilliant. It was tough working in the heat but four years ago we had mud and rain.”

And despite a small power outage which left the stage in darkness just after Dizzee Rascal started his performance, crowds were impressed by the headliner’s performance – which included a pyrotechnics display.

Steve said: “The pyrotechnics in Dizzee Rascal’s set were absolutely phenomenal. A power outage like that has never happened before.

“The first note that came out of the sound system was the loudest noise and the power just went. It was some sort of surge.

“It was only for a few minutes but it added to the atmosphere and people thought it was part of the show and really enjoyed it.”

Planning for next year’s festival is “already underway” even though the clear-up process is still ongoing until Wednesday.
