“Direspectful” people have been leaving litter and fast food cartons strewn on the town’s war memorial, according to a BFP reader, after anger erupted this week over it being used as a ‘Pokemon’ stop.

Louis Fuller sent this photo of McDonald's rubbish left on the monument to the hundreds of men killed in First World War.

He said: “I think it is disgraceful that people think they can leave their litter lying around, of all places they choose a war memorial.”

The war memorial sparked controversy this week after ex-serviceman, Sid Oliver, complained to the BFP that it was “disrespectful” and “disgraceful” that large groups of people continuously choose to sit on the memorial.

It was also revealed that it has become a focal point for gamers playing the hugely popular ‘Pokemon Go’, with the churchyard featured in the game.

And although many do not see anything wrong with sitting on the site, some are angry at the misuse of the stone structure, with litter left immediately next to the poppy wreaths laid on Remembrance Sunday.

Mr Fuller, who said there is “no excuse” for littering, added that those travelling huge distances to play the game should have a little more respect: “People will walk 5km for an egg, but can’t walk 20 paces to the nearest bin.

“I was on the fence with your previous article until now. Now I believe that people are desecrating this memorial site has crossed a line.”
