Neighbours of council-owned land where travellers set up camp last week, are furious after human faeces, rubbish and electrical items were discovered on the site.

A clean-up operation has begun on a grass area of Totteridge Lane, High Wycombe, after travellers in around 15 to 20 caravans left the site after almost a week.

Human faeces is now being cleared up, along with stereos, washing machines a fridge and chopped up trees, according to eyewitnesses.

Reg Prole, who has lived across the road from the land near to the Beech Tree Pub for more than 30 years, said: "They seem to be totally lawless, dumping all their waste there - we have mountains of the stuff.

"They have a reputation for not being very trustworthy and leave such a mess.

"We can't take our dogs for a walk there because they have their own dogs that don't come across as being very friendly.

"We just have to avoid it when they are down there.

"If they were better behaved, people would be more inclined not to worry so much, but they are not."

Philip Thorogood, who also lives opposite the site, said he was "very relieved" when they were asked by Wycombe District Council to leave by Sunday.

He said: "No-one goes near them because we don't know what they are like.

"As soon as they come, the rubbish comes. The police don't seem to have any power to force them off.

"The worst part of it is the human waste that has been dumped there.

"I'm very relieved they have been asked to leave but they are someone else's problem now, there are just doing the same thing somewhere else.

"I just wish we could stop them across the nation."

The travellers moved onto the land on Monday, August 15, and have now moved on.

WDC contractors are currently on site clearing the waste.
