A train full of commuters "jumped in the air" after a gang of young people put wooden planks across the railway line.

This picture shows the moment the group placed the wood on the line that runs to south Bucks - minutes before a busy train sped through the area.

British Transport Police have blasted the youngsters' actions as "incredibly stupid" and warned that the train could have been derailed.

At around 7pm on August 11, the group of young people were caught on camera putting the items - believed to be large wooden planks - across the lines just outside of Aylesbury (Stoke Leys Close).

The incident happened on the same line that runs through Princes Risborough, High Wycombe and Beaconsfield.

A concerned member of the public phoned 999, but in the meantime, a train had struck the wooden planks.

Luckily, the train was not derailed but passengers said they felt it "jump in the air".

There were no injuries but the train suffered damage.

BTP are now urging anyone with information get in touch.

Investigating officer PC Jay Townsend said: “It beggars belief that someone would think this was a funny thing to do.

“Not only is trespassing on the railway extremely dangerous – with trains travelling well in excess of 100mph – but this could have caused the train to derail, and who knows what might have happened.

“Although these images are grainy, we are releasing them in the hope that someone comes forward with information. Do you know who might have done this? Have you seen someone bragging about this on social media, or maybe uploading a video of themselves on the tracks?

“If you have any information, please get in touch. We were lucky this time but acts like this can easily have fatal consequences.”

Anyone with information can call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016, quoting 505 of 11/8.
