Thousands of people lined the streets of Beaconsfield to cheer on teams taking on the annual stretcher race yesterday.

The popular race - which saw 11 teams of four in fancy dress carry a fifth person on a stretcher around a course of eight pubs, stopping at each for a “half” - was part of the Beaconsfield Country Fayre.

The Great British Bake Off proved to be a popular theme for racers this year, with one team even carrying "Mary Berry" on their stretcher.

For the first time, the Beaconsfield Round Table - which helps to organise the event - took part in the stretcher race on behalf of the Thames Valley Air Ambulance.

Wild Training and Beaconsfield Cycling Club also took part in the race around the Old Town, but the winners were 'The Meat Men' who won for the third year in a row.

Elsewhere, visitors to the fayre enjoyed a classic car show by A.J Dunlop garage, dog show, climbing wall, go-karts and fairground games.

Simon Woolf, from the Beaconsfield Country Fayre committee, said the event was so successful, they even had a team of women sign up for next year's stretcher race.

He said: "It is a wonderful feeling when you see everyone really enjoying themselves. We have had emails saying it was a wonderful day and people were saying it is the best one yet.

"It was a brilliant day. It was so busy and the food stalls were buzzing."
