Rock star Ozzy Osbourne and his son Jack paid a visit Beaconsfield’s historic pub as part of their latest documentary series - much to the delight of surprised tourists.

The pair popped in to The Royal Standard on England in Forty Green for lunch and to discuss the pub’s rich history with the landlord Matthew O’Keeffe as part of their show Ozzy and Jack’s World Detour – which airs on HISTORY this month.

During the visit Mr O’Keeffe convinced his famous guests to try his customers' favourite – fish and chips – while they chatted about the long standing tradition of the British pub.

He said: “Really he just came in for a lunch and we had a chat. There were some visitors there at the time from the states who thought it was fantastic because they had met their hero.

“We talked about the pub and its history and how pubs started. During the Saxon times someone would make beer and of course if you were good at it people would go over and sit in the front room and drink the beer.

“It was beer because it is boiled and better than drinking water because you could get Typhoid.”

The Royal Standard is believed to be the oldest free house in the country as it is not tied to a brewery, according to Mr O’Keeffe  - who says Britain should be “proud” it gave the world pubs.

He added: “Britain gave pubs to the world. When people come to the country they see the sites, they go to the British museum but they all want to go to a pub they see in British culture on TV.

“Britain should be proud that it gave the world pubs. There should be a programme about pubs because they are so important to British culture.

“We are doing what people have done for centuries. You can sit in a pub and know people have done it for years so there is a lot of good cheer going on.

“The independent pubs are competing with the chains they should stick to what they do best and be a pub.”

Ozzy and Jack’s World Detour will premier on HISTORY on Sunday, September 18 at 9pm.
