Amersham & Chiltern’s start to life in National League Three London & South East got off to a shaky start with a 32-5 defeat to Sutton & Epsom.
Having gained promotion last season, Chiltern came into the match nursing a number of injuries to some key members of their side.
They were second best throughout the match and Sutton made their dominance pay in the 15th minute with the go ahead try.
Some poor handling and a failure to take advantage of the few chances they did create left Chiltern facing an uphill task at the interval as they trailed 20-0.
A host of changes gave Chiltern more of a foothold in proceedings in the second period, but some needless penalties allowed Sutton to push on and increase their lead.
Chiltern did gain some reward in the 53rd minute after a well worked routine gave debutant hooker, Ed Church, the chance to score Chiltern’s only try of the match.
The score meant little in the grand scheme of things and a below par Chiltern were well beaten.
Encouraging debuts from Ian Stock, Jack Elborn, Nicholas Harrison and Mike McDonald did, however, provide a source of positivity for the future.
Richie Williams’ side will look to rediscover the form they showed last season when they take on Hertford on Saturday.
