A season to forget ended in dismal fashion for Gerrards Cross on Saturday as they lost to Shipton-under-Wychwood in a rain affected match.

The result sees Cross finish the campaign second bottom of the Home Counties Premier League Division Two after winning three matches all season.

Shipton won the toss and elected to bat in conditions which favoured the bowling side. They were in trouble early on when Jonathan Denning (1-32) dismissed Calvin Dickinson for a duck.

Any uneasiness created by the wicket soon dissipated as Anupam Sanklecha (37) and Joseph Barrett (62) shared a 106-run partnership for the second wicket.

Their work would be undermined by a batting collapse which saw the Shipton score lurch to 138-6 before they were all out for 174 in the 41st over.

Joseph Bracey took the majority of the wickets with 3-22 and Richard Knudsen (2-30), Elliot Green (2-31) and Sam Westaway (1-23) also pitched in.

At 119-6 Cross were making a relatively strong fist of chasing down the target when the weather closed in to deny them the chance of a final day win.

The Duckworth Lewis method handed their opponents the win after a truncated innings had seen Cross’ batsmen struggle to make telling individual scores.

Alex Woodland was their top scorer with 21, while Westaway (19) and Benjamin Lane (18) were the next highest scorers.

Elsewhere, Beaconsfield claimed a mid-table finish in the Thames Valley League Division 2B after their match with Henley Seconds was abandoned on Saturday.

Bad weather left the division’s fixture schedule in tatters as all but one of the five matches due to be played were called off.

Having already been crowned champions, Henley came into the match with little to play for and were sluggish with the bat.

Only Adam Francis (59) and Ross Richardson (43) really made an impact on the scorers as Beaconsfield’s bowlers took charge of proceedings.

They produced a controlled display and coughed up just eight extras throughout the Henley innings which ended with the visitors on 176-9.

Their bowlers shared the wicket taking duties with David Williams (3-26), Simon Wheeler (2-26), Nigel Dunstan (2-36) and Euan Brock (2-38) all striking.

Beaconsfield looked in a strong position to kick on and pick up a win, but they never got the chance to bat as poor weather prevented any more play taking place.
