He may have only played five games for the club, but Jamal Blackman says he is willing to extend his stay with Wycombe Wanderers.

The Chelsea loanee’s current deal expires on Tuesday, January 3 after he was signed to cover for the injured Scott Brown.

After impressing in the early days of his Wanderers career, Blackman says staying beyond his initial loan and potentially battling Brown for the number one spot appeals to him.

“I would like to stay longer and it is obviously up to the gaffer and my performances to decide if I can,” Blackman said.

“That [being first-choice keeper] is up to the manager, but I will do as much as I can to stay number one.”

He will fill that role while Scott Brown, who signed a two-year deal in July, recovers from a thigh injury sustained on the opening-day defeat against Crawley Town.

The 22-year-old has made an assured start to life at Adams Park and has impressed with his handling, shot-stopping ability, and command of his area.

He was arguably Wycombe’s best player against Luton Town on Saturday, in spite of the 4-1 scoreline as he made some decent saves.

His display included denying former Chelsea youth team player Cameron McGeehan from 12 yards.

He also played a pivotal part in the 0-0 draw at Blackpool last month with some fine late stops and has coped well during Wanderers’ testing start to League Two.

Blackman believes his 6ft 6in stature and experience around the Chelsea first team has allowed him to acclimatise to life in League Two quickly.

“My physical attributes are one of my biggest strengths. I am good in the air which helps when you come to a league where a lot of balls come in your box,” he explained.

“The manager told me to bring my experience from being in the first team at Chelsea to the team.

“Coming to League Two is different to the Premier League, but football is football so you just have to go out there and show what you can do.”
