Marlow’s mayor says he was “extremely proud and honoured” that the town was chosen to host the annual RAF Freedom of the District Parade.

More than 2,000 people cheered and waved flags on Sunday (September 18) as members of the RAF marched up the High Street with swords drawn and bayonets fixed.

The prestigious event marked the moment the RAF High Wycombe base in Naphill was awarded the freedom of the district by Wycombe District Council in 2011.

Freedom of the then Wycombe borough was granted in 1971, but this was extended to the Wycombe District in 2011.

RAF station commander, Group Captain Phil Lester, said the Freedom Parade celebrates the “close relationship that exists between the community of the Wycombe district and RAF High Wycombe.”

Air training cadets from across Wycombe also paraded in celebration of their 75th anniversary, while a Battle of Britain commemoration was held at the war memorial.

Marlow mayor, cllr Bob Johnson, said the “first class” parade was one of the most successful celebrations the town has hosted.

He said: “It went very well. We were delighted and very honoured to host the parade. It was a great spectacle to have RAF servicemen and women parading up and down the High Street.

“There were around 2,000 people showing their support and it was absolutely excellent when people broke out into applause as they paraded past.

“It was an absolutely marvellous event and there was so much great work done by everyone to make it happen. It was the most successful event we have had for a long time.”

Prominent figures including South Bucks District Council chairman cllr Duncan Smith, Chiltern District Council chairman cllr Mimi Harker OBE, Wycombe MP Steve Baker and Wycombe District Council chairman cllr Mahboob Hussain joined the celebrations, which included a service at All Saints Church.
