A “well loved” library was forced to close yesterday after a burglar broke in and stole two charity boxes in the early hours of the morning.

A man forced his way into Burnham Library on Windsor Lane through the rear door at around 12.10 am on Thursday.

He tried to tear a television from the wall in the main room of the library, damaging a wall bracket in the process.

The burglar then took two charity boxes containing cash for the Friends of Burnham Library and the British Legion Poppy Appeal from the front desk and left the building.

He is described as slim and was wearing a hooded jumper with the hood up.

Investigating officer PC Rebecca Neupert, based at Amersham police station, said: "I am looking for witnesses who may have seen any unusual activity or suspicious behaviour during the lead up to this offence or after it.

"This offences is quite distressing as the offender has targeted a community building which is well loved in the local area. As a result of this incident the library had to close for the day, which understandably has had an impact on local users.

"Even more disappointingly, two charity boxes have been stolen. Friends of Burnham Library is a community charity which provides reading and learning services in the area, enhances the library experience and supports local events.

"With Remembrance Sunday approaching it is also distressing that the Poppy Appeal box was taken, taking funds away from this charity."

Anyone with any information on the incident has been urged to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
