A Beaconsfield school pupil scooped the top prize in a county-wide road safety competition with his “powerful” banner design.

Jaipal Kaler, 10, from Holtspur School, was chosen as the winner from hundreds of entries into the competition run by road safety charity Brake and branded product company Recognition Express South Bucks in Beaconsfield.

It is the second time a pupil at the Cherry Tree Road-based school has won the competition – the first was in 2014.

Children across the county were asked to design a banner conveying a road safety message of their choice drawn from this year’s Road Safety Week theme, which focuses on six elements: slow, sober, secure, silent, sharp and sustainable.

Judges said the “eye-catching” design by Jaipal best showcased the theme.

Head teacher Fiona O’Reilly said: “We were thrilled to have a winner in 2014 but to win this national competition for the second time makes us extremely proud of our pupils.

“Road safety is an important issue for our school and we’re grateful to Recognition Express for this competition, which has provided a fun way of engaging the children about the subject.

“They have made a huge effort and I think their designs communicate very well the importance of road safety.”

Andy Lian, director of Recognition Express South Bucks, said: “This competition is one of the highlights of our year and we really look forward to receiving the children’s designs.

“The results are always fantastic and we are sure that Jaipal’s banner will encourage people to think more about road safety.”

Jaipal received a trophy and the school was given high visibility drawstring bags for all its pupils as part of the prize.
