All traffic lights on a congestion blackspot in High Wycombe could be replaced with roundabouts following pleas from the public and councillors to cure the town’s traffic woes.

Wycombe District Council said it is exploring ways to ease the district’s traffic problems with Bucks County Council, which could potentially see London Road traffic lights swapped with roundabouts.

Councillor Lesley Clarke called on WDC to stick to past promises and link the town’s traffic lights together after regularly getting stuck at the numerous red lights along the busy road.

At a full WDC council meeting on December 12, cllr Clarke said: “A few years ago working with the county council we agreed we would link all our traffic lights.

“Where I live on the London Road there are 9 traffic lights to take me to Morrisons and 6 pedestrian lights.

“There are 10 traffic lights to Handy Cross and four pedestrian lights. There are 10 traffic lights to Sainsbury’s and 6 pedestrian lights, and none of them are linked.”

Leader of the council, cllr Katrina Wood, said it has been a “long term aspiration” of the council to rid the town of traffic troubles, however WDC has

“serious doubts” as to whether traffic lights are appropriate for the London Road, leading it to explore introducing some or all of them with roundabouts.

She said: “We have serious doubts whether traffic lights are actually the best thing in so many areas – as you say the number you have to go through to get anywhere.

“They don’t manage traffic flows effectively, and so addressing the traffic problems on the London road for example, we are exploring the possibility of replacing some or all of them with roundabouts.

“Until we have looked at all the possible junction designs and have completed traffic modelling work we can’t offer any guarantees as to what could happen.

“Please be assured we will be positively pursuing it with BCC and we will be publishing a report as soon as we can.”

In the same meeting cllr Wood assured the council a number of traffic alleviation projects continue throughout the district, including improvements at Westhorpe Interchange in Marlow, creating access to High Wycombe from the strategic road network, and the proposed relief road in Princes Risborough.

Cllr Wood added: “Traffic issues in the district are already significant but not simple to solve. However we are working hard to deliver cost effective solutions and I can assure you we do work closely with BCC on traffic issues.”
