Snow showers finally hit south Bucks last night as temperatures plummeted, with police warning drivers to stay safe and warm in case of a breakdown.

A yellow warning for snow and ice was in place for the county until midnight today - it has now been extended to 12pm tomorrow (Saturday) - with ice expected to form on untreated surfaces, according to Met Office weather reports.

Drivers have been advised ice will disrupt journeys and to leave extra time when travelling, especially on longer journeys.

Snow, sleet and hail showers could continue through the first part of Friday, with between two and four centimetres of snow settling in some low lying areas. Some high ground could see as much as five to 10 centimetres, according to Met Office predictions.

Pictures were sent in to the Bucks Free Press yesterday evening from across the county, showing a covering of snow in Stokenchurch, Hazlemere and Great Missenden.

According to BBC’s weather service, High Wycombe will see light snow today, sunny intervals tomorrow and potentially heavy rain on Sunday.

But temperatures, which have been below freezing on some days, are set to rise to eight degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Thames Valley Police has issued the following advice for those driving in snowy and icy conditions:

If you are planning a journey in the next 24 hours, we advise you to check the weather forecast from the Met Office at: www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast.

Consider if your journey is necessary. If so here are some reminders to consider before setting off:

  • Have a fully charged mobile phone
  • Wear warm clothing and take some extra clothes in your vehicle
  • Take a torch, some food and water
  • Make sure you have screenwash in your car
  • Tell someone your destination, the time you expect to arrive and your planned route
  • Check the Highway Code for advice on driving in snowy and icy conditions.
