A hospice care charity is calling for people to nominate inspiring women to win an award.

Sue Ryder, which provides care to people with end of life and long term needs, is holding their 2017 Southern Women of Achievement Awards ceremony on March 10.

Inspired by the charity’s own founder, the awards celebrate women from across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire who stand out as a role model.

Sue Ryder, who passed away in November 2000, was a humanitarian dedicated to the relief of suffering.

Her work started during WWII, helping people displaced from their homes as a result of war.

After the war she widened the scope of her work, supporting people with complex needs and life-threatening conditions across the UK and internationally.

There are seven award categories for the 2017 event - Woman of Achievement in Business, Woman of Achievement in the Community, Woman of Achievement in Education, Woman of Achievement in Sports, Woman of Achievement in Services, Young Woman of Achievement and the Sue Ryder Courage Award.

The awards will support the Duchess of Kent and Nettlebed Hospices, Charles Clore Unit in Newbury and Wokingham Day Hospice.

Inspired 2016 Southern Woman of Achievement in Sports winner Heather Stanning MBE has been announced as an ambassador for the 2017 awards, along with Courage Award winner Samina Hussain, Services Award winner Flight Sergeant Rousell and Business Award winner Anna Rowe.

Tracey Hancock, head of fundraising at Sue Ryder’s Duchess of Kent and Nettlebed hospices, said: “The Women of Achievement Awards are here to recognise remarkable women, highlighted by our truly inspirational ambassadors. If you know a lady who does amazing things, I encourage you to nominate her today.

“The event is becoming more popular year on year and is one of our biggest fundraising events, helping us to continue to provide all the services we offer within Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.”
