A huge emergency services operation is still ongoing in Oxford after a block of flats was destroyed in a devastating explosion yesterday – echoing a gas leak which brought a village home crumbling to the ground in 2015.

The three-storey block of flats in West Oxford collapsed after a blast ripped through the building at about 5pm.

Emergency workers at the scene are continuing to search through the rubble this morning, looking for a number of people who remain missing.

The explosion comes almost 15 months after a family home in Old Watery Lane, Wooburn Green was destroyed – a day which still lives long in the memory for residents.

The community rallied to help the stricken family, with the seriously injured homeowner being pulled free from the rubble.

It was later revealed by fire investigators that the Wooburn blast was caused by a gas leak from a portable heater.
