The cast of a smash hit musical are launching a search for a future bride or groom to pop the question live on stage in Marlow.

Fresh after their sell out production of Legally Blonde in March last year, The Marlow Amateur Operatic Society are back with the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical adaptation of The Wedding Singer – the hilarious 1998 movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

In a bid to follow the tradition of the original Broadway production, MAOS are beginning a search for men or women to propose to their lucky partner live on stage in front of an audience following any performance from Wednesday, March 15 to Saturday, March 18.

Speaking of the campaign, director of The Wedding Singer, Heather Bustin, said: “This is a unique opportunity for any future happy couple and fits in brilliantly with the theme of the show, paying homage to the original Broadway production, while also giving the cast a fantastic opportunity to reach out into the community. There aren’t that many people who can say they were proposed to live on stage.”

Set in 1985, The Wedding Singer tells the story of rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart, who still lives in his grandmother's basement, and is New Jersey's favourite wedding singer.

He's the life of the party until his fiancé, Linda, leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie intends to make every wedding as disastrous as his own.

When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, Robbie falls madly in love. Only trouble is Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

With a Tony Award-nominated score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980s, The Wedding Singer is determined to take you back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room.

The MAOS, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, has been delighting audiences with a host of different shows throughout the years, including the likes of Oklahoma! in 2006 and Footloose in 2011.

The society’s first performance was in 1956 - in the autumn of 1955, 41 members began rehearsals for H.M.S Pinafore and the show was performed over four nights in April 1956 in The Public Hall, now known as Liston Hall.

Tickets for the show, which will take place at the Shelley Theatre at Court Garden Leisure Complex, are on sale now, available through the MAOS Box Office at www.maosmarlow.com/box-office.
