A school pupil from Burnham drew her way to a £50,000 energy makeover for her school.

Tansie Davies, aged nine, scooped the top prize in British Gas’ ‘generation green’ competition, in which children designed an energy-saving comic strip to show the benefits of smart meters.

The competition aimed to get children thinking creatively about how they use and save energy.

The St Peter’s CofE Primary School pupil beat more than 4,000 entrants from 123 schools across the country, with her winning comic strip showing her and British Gas mascot Wilbur saving energy by closing the door, turning off the lights and filling the kettle with the amount of water actually needed.

The Minniecroft Road-based school is now set to be transformed with the latest energy-saving technology such as solar panels, LED lighting and a new energy efficient boiler.

Tansie also won a trip to London to visit the Science Museum.

She said: “I can’t believe my comic strip has been chosen as the national winner – I really enjoyed learning about energy efficiency and smart technology.

“I’m so excited for my trip to the science museum and for our school to have the makeover.”

The panel of judges included The Beano artist Nigel Parkinson, who said: “I knew all the entrants would be good and it was difficult to choose finalists but this one stood out for all the judges; great drawing, lovely colours, brief and to the point and with brisk humour.

“Tansie is a worthy winner – congratulations.”

Head teacher Lesley Blount said: “Tansie’s comic strip was outstanding and we’re proud that she’s won an energy makeover for our school.

“The makeover will help us to save energy every day and will inspire our pupils now and in the future to be more energy efficient.”

Catherine O’Kelly, who leads the smart meter roll-out at British Gas and was one of the generation green judges, said: “Congratulations to Tansie Davies for winning the Smarter Power competition and the energy makeover for her school.

“Tansie’s comic strip was a unanimous favourite with the judges, because of how it brought energy saving with smart meters to life in a colourful and humourous way. Well done.”
