Realigning a dangerous High Wycombe roundabout should be made “highest priority”, before a head on collision occurs, according to a councillor.

On Tuesday in just 30 minutes a total of 30 vehicles were spotted going the wrong way round the mini roundabout in Hatters Lane.

This came a week after Wycombe District Council announced the roundabout will be realigned to slow down traffic following years of campaigning by concerned residents.

Councillor Julia Wassell, who sits on both district and county councils, said moving the roundabout should now be made “highest priority” before a serious crash happens.

She said: “When I was elected as district councillor in 2015 residents were very unhappy about the safety of the roundabout because there were regular collisions and some injuries so I went to inspect it with cllr Ditta.

“We said it looked like a half-eaten biscuit lying in the road, and we saw people going round it in the wrong way, and having uncertainty that it was a junction and who had to give way to who.

“Now it has been identified as an issue it should be made the highest priority and we want to see the full proposals along with the new signage no later than the public consultation in June.

“It is inevitable that more accidents will happen. There is a possibility that there will be a head on collision with people going round the roundabout the wrong way, and people coming in the opposite direction at speed which they often do.”

A number of safety measures for pedestrians will also be created when the roundabout is moved, costing £100,000 altogether.

However WDC said there is “no firm timescale” for the project, but it is hoped the work will be completed within the next four to six months.

Spokesman for WDC, Sue Robinson, said: "We’ve approved up to £100,000 Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding after a recommendation from the High Wycombe Town Committee.

"Bucks County Council will be organising the roadworks on the ground through their contractors at Transport for Bucks.

"We don’t have firm timescales right now but once we’ve got detailed design work done we’ll have more information - but it would likely that the work will be done within the next four to six months".

A petition set up by concerned resident Dannii Laine in 2015, which gathered more than 370 supporters, called for the roundabout to be re-positioned or a traffic light junction to be installed to better manage the flow of traffic on the road.

A public consultation on the plans is expected to take place in June, however details are yet to be confirmed.
