Community figures gathered at the site of a new retirement village in High Wycombe last week to unveil a new foundation stone ahead of the grand opening next year.

More than 100 people flocked to the Hughenden Gardens apartment complex, in Hughenden Road, on March 22 to watch 75-year old Joyce Melia, who will move the village, unveil the stone.

The retirement village, near Morrisons, is due to open next year and will include 260 homes, a shop, IT area, village hall, library, fitness suite and a Marston’s Pub.

Cllr Mahboob Hussain, Chairman of Wycombe District Council, said: “Today’s event was great – it was fantastic to see such a good local turnout from the community – people who live locally who are all interested in the new ExtraCare retirement village currently being built on land which Wycombe District Council has brought back into use.

“It shows that our regeneration investment has in turn unlocked investment in this project which will provide great accommodation for local people.”

Cllr Val Letheren, chairman of Buckinghamshire County Council, added: “As a long term resident of High Wycombe and a former mayor, I’m delighted that ExtraCare have chosen Wycombe as the site of their latest development.”

The project is a partnership between charity The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, Wycombe District Council and Buckinghamshire County Council - with a contribution from the Homes and Communities Agency.
