A Hazlemere school has raised tens of thousands of pounds for a hospice charity.

Sir William Ramsay, in Rose Avenue, smashed its £10,000 fundraising target, donating £13,910 to South Bucks Hospice, collected through various fundraising activities over the past two years.

Year 8 pastoral manager at the school Janet Sneesby said: “Our target of £10,000 felt quite ambitious at the time.

“But instead we made almost £14,000 and we are so proud of this achievement.

“The children got so excited about fundraising and it’s good because it’s relevant to them and the community.

“Most of us know or are going to know somebody who is terminally ill. So raising money for a local charity that caters for that is wonderful.”

Mrs Sneesby added that the charity was chosen as the school’s nominated charity two years in a row due to it being a “prominent local organisation”.

Fundraising activities included staff head shaves, non-uniform days, a Year 7 and 8 disco, fun run, a staff three peaks challenge, various cake sales and a sponsored butterfly decorated Christmas tree.

Students and staff presented the charity with the cheque during a school assembly with the Year 8s, as they announced the form group that raised the highest amount of money.

The winning group was rewarded with pizza at lunch.

South Bucks Hospice CEO Jo Woolf said: “The pupils of Sir William Ramsay School have put in so much energy and hard work and have delivered an absolutely brilliant result helping us to fund our new hospice.

“These young students can be truly proud of their achievement they have helped us to raise awareness of our charity and encourage volunteers of all ages.

“It really makes our patients, their families and carers feel very special to know that these young people care enough to fundraise so hard on behalf of their community.

“Because we only receive three percent of funding from statutory sources, we need this kind of help from our local community to fund the invaluable care provided to our terminally ill patients throughout south Buckinghamshire.”
