A woman who once worked on America’s notorious death row will bring her latest solo comedy show to North Finchley this weekend, after quite an astonishing career change.

Following a total sell-out Edinburgh Fringe Festival run before the events had even started, swiftly followed by a sell-out two-week run at London’s Soho Theatre, Scottish comedian and Radio 4 regular Susan Calman brings her tour of The Calman Before the Storm to the artsdepot on Friday, June 2.

Having worked on Death Row and at the United Nations in Geneva as a former corporate lawyer, Susan decided to give up her career to become a comedian in 2006 when she reached the semi-finals of the BBC New Comedy and So You Think You’re Funny awards.

In 2007 she was part of sell-out Fringe show Ugly Kid which went on to become Channel 4’s Blowout and whose cast was awarded a Scottish BAFTA that same year.

Throughout the show she seeks to challenge many assumptions, including those about her political stance, her height, her nationality and her sexuality.

Her numerous radio credits include The News Quiz, The Unbelievable Truth, Now Show, Dilemma, ISIHAC, So Wrong it’s Right and she has presented Woman’s Hour, all for Radio 4. She also hosted Listomania for Radio 2. A second series of her sitcom Sisters will be recorded in the autumn and her third solo radio series, Keep Calman and Carry On, was broadcast in spring 2016.

Sometimes Susan is seen on television and has so far acted in How Not to Live Your Life, Rab C Nesbitt, Dead Boss and Fresh Meat. She’s also appeared on Have I Got News for You, QI, Don’t Sit In The Front Row, Comedy Rocks, Show and Tell, The Matt Lucas Awards, Dara O’Briain’s School of Hard Sums, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Would I Lie To You and Mock the Week. She is currently working on Too Much TV for BBC2 and she will soon host 30 episodes of a new CBBC quiz show Top Class.

She’s written a book called Cheer Up Love which was an Audible Bestseller in 2016, and has started work on her second book, which will be released in the Spring of 2018.

Her first DVD Lady Like, which was recorded at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, is on sale now, and her book Cheer Up Love: Adventures in Depression with the Crab of Hate is out via Two Roads.
