A popular cook shop in Marlow is to relocate after nearly 10 years in a historic town centre building as plans emerge to return it to its former glory as a bar and restaurant.

Steamer Trading Cookshop, which is currently located in the former market hall at the top of the High Street, is now looking for new premises within the town as the building – which was once the famous Crown Inn – is set to return to its former purpose.

Steamer Trading was this year approached by Marston’s, who have drawn up plans to create a new interior within the Grade II* listed building.

Commenting on the plans, Steamer Trading’s Managing Director, Ben Phillips, said: “We fully understood what Marston’s wanted to achieve with this great building, and I saw that they were as excited by the opportunity as I was when we found it, nearly 10 years ago.

“We know that there was huge interest within Marlow for a use that truly opened up the first floor assembly room to the public and Marston’s plans really do that.

“I’m sad that we’ll be leaving what is one of my favourite shops in an amazing building, but I know that we’re leaving it in good hands and I can't wait to see the interior all put back together as one amazing space again.”

When Steamer Trading moved into the landmark building in 2008, the kitchenware shop set about a full scale refurbishment of the premises, including a restoration of the town clock.

The store has also hosted a string of free cookery demonstrations by Marlow’s favourite chef, Tom Kerridge, and provided the venue for the successful Pop-up Picture House over Christmas, raising money for Children in Need.

Bosses at Steamer Trading hope the family-owned company’s absence from the town will be brief.

Mr Phillips added: “Amanda Smith, our store manager, and her team have built some great relationships with customers from far and wide and we've got some great friendships within the town, not least with Tom and Beth Kerridge, who have been really supportive and generous with their time over the years.

“We don't want to leave Marlow, so we’ll be trying to find a new home as quickly as we can.”
