A £25,000 study into providing toilets at a High Wycombe park has been likened to a “GCSE project”, with proposals being compared to a “massive carbuncle” on one of the “most treasured” spots in the area.

A petition was launched by park users at The Rye three years ago, calling for a second set of toilets to be introduced to facilitate the two play areas at the green space.

The High Wycombe Town Committee agreed to fund a feasibility study to “explore options”, which was presented to committee councillors at a meeting on Tuesday, June 13.

A number of options were presented in the report, which was put together by an architect, including introducing a leased visitor centre with a café and toilets at the entrance to the park, however councillors criticised the “glass box” design of the building.

Ward member for Totteridge, Julia Wassell, said: “I was horrified when I saw the large glass box, I wasn’t sure if it was an aquarium or a large bus stop but it is totally out of keeping with the view onto The Rye.

"I do find it quite comical that residents asked for public conveniences, and it seems to me if you want a wash hand basin then you have to have some sort of attraction or tourist centre, if you want one toilet you need Disneyworld and if you want three toilets you have to have Jurassic Park Three. Can we not just have the toilets?”

Wycombe District Council officer, Elaine Jewell, said the toilets needed to be funded by an “income generating service”, however added introducing a toilet to The Boathouse Café in the park is the most feasible option.

Ward member for Micklefield, Matt Knight, said: “I wonder how the people who put it together were briefed because we have spent £25,000 on this report.

"It is a massive carbuncle basically dumped on the most treasured approaches to Wycombe.

"I want to see the options for composting toilets, the options for different ways for providing facilities, I want to see cost for bringing in a temporary toilet block.

“That is what I wanted to see, all those costs, not some crazy out of the box ideas about some zig zag shaped signs and that glass thing on The Rye...

“The public petitioned to the council because they wanted toilets because to put it very bluntly someone’s daughter wet themselves on the rye and it caused a lot of distress. The council has spent £25,000 and produce a report which gives no solutions.”

The town committee agreed to recommend refurbishing The Boat House Café as well as introducing a toilet at the site to Wycombe District Council’s cabinet.
