Hundreds of people dressed in 1940s inspired outfits and took part in group swing dance in a bid to break a world record at Buckinghamshire Armed Forces Day this weekend.

Led by former Britain’s Got Talent contestants, The Jive Aces, 300 dancers took centre stage at Aylesbury Rugby Club on Saturday and attempted to break the record for the world’s biggest swing dance.

While the group did not beat the current record of 1,184 participants, set by Cowboy Country Swing Club in Wyoming, USA, organisers hailed the performance as an “incredible spectacle”.

The annual event included a fly-past from the world-famous Red Arrows display team as well as appearances from a Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane Fighter.

Classic planes took to the sky in the afternoon including an ex-military YAK 52 training aircraft, a WW2 P51 Mustang, a North American Aviation Navion and a Cessna L-19 Birddog 24550.

A statement on the Armed Forces Day Facebook page said: "Well they say its the taking part that counts and we proved just that at Armed Forces Day when we attempted a world record swing dance in blistering heat.

"We didn't make the record but watching 300 people dance the same routine to The Jive Aces playing live was an incredible spectacle - you all looked amazing."
