A neighbour has spoken about her horror when she realised a fire, which is believed to have started in a summerhouse, had spread to her back garden.

Firefighters received 40 calls about the blaze in Upper Belmont Road, Chesham, which had spread to the back gardens of six other properties and a conservatory, on Monday afternoon.

The neighbour, who did not want to be named, said her young children screamed at her in terror, saying: “Let’s go.”

She said: “I called the firefighters and they came in about 15 or 20 minutes. The fire spread quite a lot. There were some gas cylinders at the back that then exploded – that made it even worse.

“The back house’s conservatory windows broke. We don’t know where it started from. My kids were crying when they saw it, we were really scared.

“My son said let’s get out of the house – I was just about to go for a shower. They started screaming saying let’s go out and when I saw it, it was just too huge.”

Pictures and a video from the scene show the back part of the resident’s garden completely destroyed, with charred wood from the fence and some shattered glass, as well as a burnt out conservatory in the background from another house.

She added: “It was really scary. We’re fasting as well and it’s the last thing we want to happen.

“We didn’t even open our fast properly because we were so stressed. All my family were here until three in the morning.”
