STUDENTS were locked in their classrooms as police responded to reports of intruders vandalising a Bournemouth school.

There are calls for police action after three students from Tregonwell Academy broke a window at Avonbourne College, triggering an ‘invacuation’ at four establishments on the site.

Avonbourne Trust issued a ‘Code X’ during the incident, which meant that students at Avonbourne College, Harewood College, Avonbourne Sixth Form and Avonwood Primary School were kept in their classrooms while staff established that the school site was safe.

Police attended the scene at midday yesterday and escorted one of the teenagers from the scene. No arrests were made.

There were also no injuries during the incident, but Avonbourne CEO Debbie Godfrey-Phaure said she wanted action to be taken by the police.

She added: “I will be talking with the CEO of Ambitions Academies Trust about the incident. I want action to be taken.”

A statement from Avonbourne Trust said: “Avonbourne Trust can confirm it activated an ‘invacuation’ order earlier today for all its schools. This order, in which all students are kept inside, is designed to protect our children from intruders.

“On this occasion three young people, believed to be students from Tregonwell School, had got onto our site and we will be raising the issue with the CEO of Ambitions Multi Academy Trust.

“The incident was dealt with quickly and all Avonbourne Trust staff and students are safe and well.

“Our invacuation code has been in place for several years and worked very efficiently today.”

As a result of damage caused to one of the classrooms some lessons were relocated yesterday.

Ambitions Academies Trust operates Tregonwell Academy, which is a school for children with emotional and social difficulties. The Director of Special Education at the trust Nicki Morton confirmed that students had caused a “disruption”.

Mrs Morton said: “We can confirm that three of our students walked down our driveway and entered the Harewood grounds.

“The pupils were being followed by staff from Tregonwell who were trying to resolve the situation as soon as possible. Unfortunately the students caused a disruption, during which water was squirted and a window was broken.

“The police were called and two of the students were escorted back to Tregonwell by staff. A third was taken from the area by the police, but was not arrested.

“We have launched a full investigation into this matter and are taking it extremely seriously. We are also liaising with the management of Avonbourne and Harewood to ensure this is not able to happen again.”

Following the incident, Avonbourne College received a false alarm about a man with a knife spotted in the bushes near the school. This turned out to be council workers trimming hedges.

Tregonwell Academy were in the news last year when an 11-year-old student from the school threatened a classmate with a blade during an altercation. There were no injuries.
