CONSTRUCTION has started on two new retirement homes.

Churchill Retirement Living has begun work on two new developments in Lymington and Highcliffe.

Once complete, both buildings will comprise of more than 40 private, self-contained one and two bedroom apartments, each that are specially designed for the over 60s.

The apartments will include features such as a video-entry system, lift to all floors and a 24 hour care and support system. In addition, communal facilities include an Owners’ Lounge, Guest Suite and landscaped gardens.

James Barnes, Regional Managing Director at Churchill Retirement Living South West, comments: "With more than 11.1 million people in the UK aged 65 or over, we believe better provision of housing for older people and the need to ensure there are sufficient, good quality retirement living options to meet the needs of an ageing population is an absolute priority.

"We already have a number of successful developments across Hampshire and Dorset and we’re delighted to be bringing new developments to Lymington and Highcliffe. We have already seen lots of interest from local over 60s keen to find out more about the benefits of retirement living."

Permission for the flats in Highcliffe was granted by a planning inspector after a three-day inquiry last year.

The plans were refused by Christchurch council following fierce opposition from residents.

Residents were concerned the development would lead to the loss of "real age diversity" in the area.
