A charity fun day at a children’s nursery raised more than £1,000 for the Grenfell Tower appeal, on the anniversary of a blaze which destroyed the nursery a year ago.

The fundraising fun day, which took place at Brindley House Nursery, in Beaconsfield, raised £1,074 for the appeal, which was set up following the tragic blaze in the high-rise tower block in west London last month.

The Burkes Road-based nursery suffered its own horror blaze a year ago, which caused significant damage and took around seven months to be repaired.

Speaking about the fire, nursery owner Sarah Fahey said: “[It] was something at times it felt like we would never recover from, both personally and professionally.

“There were days when it felt like the restoration process would take forever and we would never have the beautiful nursery we once did.”

She praised the support the nursery received from staff, parents and the community during the restoration process as “amazing”, adding that staff worked “tirelessly” to make sure children were “settled and happy” at each new location they had to move to, which included Oakwood Nursery School and Davenies School.

She added: “Looking back as we reach the year anniversary it feels surreal to think of everything we went through, the daily disappointments as delays mounted in getting back into the setting.”

Ms Fahey said throughout the difficulties, “all staff remained positive, parents supportive and children happy and thriving”.

She said: “We now have our beautiful nursery back up and running. We made some tweaks and each room is bright and colourful with new resources and opportunities for the children.

“A year on we wanted to mark the anniversary as a way of saying thank you to the parents, children and staff for their support and loyalty, but coupled with this do something to make a difference to someone else, we therefore chose the Grenfell tower appeal to raise money for.

“It felt a fitting way to mark the anniversary and do something for someone else. I know the devastation fire can cause, but to lose your life, home or possessions to me is unimaginable.”

Speaking about the charity day, Ms Fahey said: “The weather wasn’t on our side, but that didn’t matter.

“The day was filled with laughter, fun and lots of fundraising. We raised £1,074 which we are really proud of and feel we can now move on from the shadow of the fire.”
