Council asked to pay for repairs

AN uninsured driver destroyed metal railings and left a gaping hole in the fencing after his car ploughed into a Bourne End recreation ground.

The motorist - a man from Wooburn Green - had a lucky escape when his silver BMW 525i left the road in Blind Lane, rolled onto its roof and careered through pedestrian safety railings. It travelled across the pavement and smashed through the wooden fence surrounding the park before coming to a halt in front of a tree.

The car came to a stop just metres from a children's play area, which was empty at the time. He walked away with only a few slight cuts. Neighbouring residents got an early wake up call from the sound of the crash at 6.30am on Sunday morning.

Kaye Townsend, of Blind Lane, said: "I just heard the awful noise as the car hit the railings. It woke me up."

The driver was arrested at the scene, but later released without charge.

He was given a £200 fixed penalty fine at Marlow police station and automatically incurred six penalty points on his driving licence for driving without insurance.

But Wooburn and Bourne End Parish Council is unhappy that its budget and money from Wycombe District Council will have to pay for repairs to the pavement and park boundary.

Police have said they consider the matter to be closed and that the issue of damage is a private matter between the driver and the parish council.

Mike Appleyard, chairman of Wooburn and Bourne End Parish Council, said: "I have asked the clerk to send a letter to the driver to seek costs for the amount the damage will cost to repair. We're just disappointed that the police didn't ask him to reimburse the parish council."

Sue, you're repeating yourself... is that the only comment you have on the story? You don't want to mention that the "pedestrian safety railings" weren't very effective, or that the story implies that the police are now doing the job of the courts by issuing the £200 fixed penalty and 6points at Marlow police station??? Or even that the Parish council writing to the driver is a waste of time - they need to pursue a civil case against him with proper legal representation. But all you have to say is "beamer drivers!" implying that they all drive wrecklessly and without insurance...

he has probably saved £100's by not being insured then gets fined £200 for both smashing a fence down AND not being insured! there is a lesson here, dont get insured, it is cheaper! Pathetic!!

And now with 6 points on his licence he probably won't even bother getting quoted for insurance next time as he knows it will be horrendously expensive, plus as his car's broken he'll just get another and scrap the BMW thus the police won't even know what he's driving in order to follow it up with a check if they happen to see it cruising around. He's probably gutted that he wasn't injured more severely as he's missing out on incapacity benefits etc...
Great reporting by the way! - What was the cause of the accident??? And just a fine for no insurance - no mention of due care and attention or wreckless driving. Had this happened at 4:30pm the consequences would have been much worse.... Shoddy policing as usual!

that fine is a blóody insult to everyone that pays their way on the roads!

Newsworthy? For once I agree with you almost 100%. We shouldn't limit ourselves to only kicking him in the face.

Jay asked what was the cause of the accident...probably some idiot coming down Blind Lane at high speed.
I am assuming he was breathalysed?
The Parish Council should send him a bill for the repair and if he doesn't pay, take him to court.

Can't have been coming at high speed as most people on this website seem to think speed is not a contributing factor in accidents.

Hey Fishface, I came down blind lane at high speed once and didn't have an accident. How can this be?

NotMe, over there says...

No insurance
Speeding (presumably, you can't roll a car at 30mph)
£200

bargain - I'm going on the rampage this weekend.

Blind lane is far to fast as it is. This type of idiot should be banned as a warning to others. 2 schools and a playground on that road.

Jay - next time you do that you will have an accident..... Thats a promise

And the chances of the driver paying up are ?????

Someone, somewhere, maybe someone who reads this paper/website will know who the driver was. How about the paper does some investigating and asks the driver to pay for the repairs.

I'm sure he/she is feeling sheepish about the incident, but if they have any decency they will make a contribution.

Sice we don't have the facts the 'uninsured-ness' could have been a mistake (policy expired or confusion about what they could drive). It may not simply have been someone who felt they were above the law (and they do seem to be).

Hey Notquiteyourself over there (thankfully)!
Get your facts right -you can roll a car at 30mph! And how can you promise me that next time I speed down blind lane I will have an accident?

Trefor, Out standing in my field says...

Agreed - I've seen a car roll at 30mph with my own eyes. And it wasn't doing the elk test at the time either. Hit a kerb or object wrong and it can happen.

May be a beeg black puddy tatt in the way ???

However...if anyone can roll a car whilst driving properly (at 30mph) I disagree.

It's a shame there's no reporting about a breath test...or drugs because this was not proper driving.

£200 and 6 points!

What would the headline read if a child had been involved?

Please find out and report if this chap pays for ths damage (I doubt) and IF the police investigated this any further. Why did he not get the book thrown ay him?

Christ there's some thick people on here. He is about 50 metres from the bayyyyyybees palyground; one can roll a vehicle at 5mph if one hit a kerb with an embankment. The vehicle is postioned next to the road therefore speeding is highly unlikely, especially the way that the vehicle has limited damage other than it being on its roof. For gods' sake grow up!!!

No relation to RTA on blind lane... However I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.
