More than 180 performers from Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire took centre stage at a Garsington Opera performance of Silver Birch over the weekend.

A standing ovation brought the opera’s season, which culminated in Silver Birch, to a close.

The production saw pupils from primary schools Chalgrove Community, Frieth CE, Holy Trinity CE, Lane End, Millbrook, St Amand’s Catholic Primary and Stokenchurch Primary taking part, as well as a number of secondary schools, including Cressex Community School.

Silver Birch was a commission featuring primary and secondary school pupils and artists from Pinewood Studios, Wycombe Women’s Aid and members of the Armed Forces community

It centres on an original story about courage when two boys go off to fight in a present-day war.

Out of 300 people who auditioned for the opera, the people chosen to take part included 60 adults as well as 90 children and young people selected from 25 schools and colleges.

A team of star-struck students from Cressex Community School, in High Wycombe, performed in a sound team led by Glen Gathard, head of digital recording at Pinewood Studios, whose previous film credits include Batman Begins, Guardians of the Galaxy and Harry Potter.
