Wycombe MP Steve Baker has backed a Bucks Free Press campaign calling for donations to a vital foodbank, as it struggles to cope with increased demand over the summer holidays.

Last week the BFP called on the community to support Wycombe-based charity One Can Trust – which provides food parcels for desperate families in need.

The charity has seen a 50 per cent increase in the number of people needing help every month, compared to last year – with an average of 448 people being served a month in 2016 compared to 664 in 2017.

This week Mr Baker hailed One Can Trust, saying the service it provides is “second to none” and praised the district’s supermarkets for supporting the charity.

He said: “My staff make referrals for constituents through casework, and the service that is received from One Can is second to none.

“It is highly undesirable that anybody should be in a position where they feel the need to visit food banks.

“I know the reasons behind demand for emergency food assistance are complex. It is a fact evident in my own casework and recognised by the Government, charities and many independent reports on the subject.

“One Can Trust is an example of how in Wycombe we generate strong bonds of friendship and community to support each other in times of need.

“I applaud the local businesses involved in the scheme, including the supermarkets who have organised 'shop and drop' facilities, a very convenient means for shoppers to contribute to the foodbank.”

The BFP launched its campaign following the revelation at Wycombe District Council has spent nearly £30,000 on refreshments for councillors while One Can Trust urgently calls for donations.
