Schools across High Wycombe are celebrating another successful A-Level results day as students have been praised for their hard work and resilience in the face of exam-reform.

Overall, 77 per cent of students at Wycombe High School, in Marlow Road, achieved A* to B grades while 43 per cent of all grades were A* and As.

Thirteen per cent of all grades were A* and 44 students achieved three or more A* and A grades and A-Level.

Head teacher Sharon Cromie said: “Over the last few years our students and teachers have been dealing with unprecedented change in qualifications.

“Amidst the reports of volatility in results nationally, I am delighted that our students have achieved so highly.

“Great A-Level results require hard work and perseverance both in and out of the classroom. Our students have demonstrated resilience, an incredible work ethic and positivity throughout.

“They, their families and school staff have much to celebrate. We are extremely proud of them and wish them well for next stages of their education or employment.”

Staff at students at Pipers Corner School, in Pipers Lane, celebrated a 100 per cent pass rate while a quarter of all grades were A* to A, and half were A* to B.

Top achievers include head girl Bethan Thomas, who secured her place at the University of Warwick to study History.

Deputy head girl Oonagh O’Donnell plans on studying psychology at the same university.

Head teacher Helen Ness-Gifford said: “It has been an impressive set of results for our Upper Sixth girls in the face of well-documented examination reform.

“At Pipers we aim to know each girl as an individual and identify, develop and support her talents and strengths.

“It is this approach that enables our students to fulfil their potential and go on to study a huge range of courses at a variety of top universities and colleges throughout the country.

“It has been wonderful to celebrate with the girls today and I wish them all every success as they move forward to the next stage of their education.”

Pupils at John Hampden Grammar School were also hailed for an “excellent” set of results as 40 per cent of all grades achieved were A* to A and 68 per cent were A* to B.

The Highcrest Academy in Hatters Lane celebrated one of the best A-Level years in its history.

100 per cent of students passed their exams, with 50 per cent achieving A* to B grades and 20 per cent gaining A*s.

All students who sat a BTEC passed, with 93.5 per cent of pupils achieving merits or above and 71 per cent gaining distinction and above.

Head teacher Glen Burke said: “Looking ahead, things can now only go from strength to strength with the building of the new sixth form centre starting in October. It will open for the academic year in 2018.”
