Adult learners in Bucks celebrated “fantastic” GCSE results in the newly reformed maths and English exams.

Sixty eight per cent of students aged between 21 and 67 years studying with Buckinghamshire Adult Learning achieved grades 9-4 in English language and 66 per cent achieved 9-4 in maths.

Mariam Ali, 42, from High Wycombe, achieved a 9 in maths and an 8 in English language.

Originally from Lebanon, Ms Ali volunteers to help others on ESOL classes (English for speakers of other languages) with Bucks Adult Learning.

She has studied a number of other courses, including creative writing and French, before deciding to study English and maths GCSE to further her career opportunities, and is now studying for the Award in Education and Training with the aim to become a tutor.

Speaking about the students’ achievements, Mike Appleyard, Bucks County Council’s cabinet member for education and skills: “These results are a fantastic achievement for all adult learners who are often juggling other demands of work and family life.

“Many of them left school without any qualifications and these results will give them another opportunity to fulfil their potential and maybe find a new career.

“I congratulate them on their achievements and to the tutors, learning support assistants and volunteers for the dedication and support they’ve given to enable the learners to succeed.”
