A south Bucks MP reportedly said he was prepared to side with Labour to force the government to give MPs a veto on the final Brexit deal, according to national media.

Beaconsfield MP Dominic Grieve, who campaigned to stay in the EU in the landmark referendum last year, allegedly told the nationals that while he accepted the referendum result, he believed leaving the EU was a “great and historic mistake”, and if the government did not listen to MPs’ views, it risked being “defeated” in the House of Commons.

According to national reports, the former Attorney General tabled 16 amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill, with Theresa May now facing a titanic battle over the flagship bill after a total of 157 amendments, covering 59 pages, were published within hours of it passing its first parliamentary hurdle, including many from senior Conservative Europhiles.

The Bill cleared its second reading in the House of Commons by a margin of 36 in the early hours of Tuesday this week.

It will repeal the 1972 act taking Britain into the European Economic Community and transpose relevant EU law on to the UK statute book to ensure there are no gaps in legislation at the point of Brexit.
