A popular coffee shop in Marlow could be set to close its doors.

Estate agents are marketing a café unit in Higginson Park, which is the current Costa Coffee site.

The listing on Simmons and Sons’s website says the property comprises a café unit with a kitchen/preparation area, indoor seating for around 20 covers and outdoor seating for around 30 covers.

The rent has been advertised as “on application” – it is not clear whether Costa will renew its lease.

Rotarian Lance Slater told the Marlow Free Press he had “much hope” that the coffee shop would stay.

He said: “My wife and I have lived here for many years and passing there many number of times, I am delighted to see how many people are there.

“I think it is a great addition to the town. It would be very disappointing if they were to close down and move away.

“The only good side would be that someone else could open up a very similar operation which I think could still be a popular venue.”

He added that the park café was doing “really well” and management had got involved with the community.

Marlow Town and Wycombe District Councillor Richard Scott said it had been “very, very successful” and he would be “sad” to see it close down.

But Marlow Society chairman Martin Blunkell, who objected to the initial application because of “excessive advertising” and “ugly signs”, said it would be good to see a smaller company take over.

He said: “It would be nice to see one of the smaller companies or member of the Chamber of Trade take on the chains.”

The café opened in April 2014 surrounded by controversy, with objectors claiming the picturesque park views were being “ruined” by the advertising signs and branding erected around the Wycombe District Council-owned site.

It was leased by Paul Messenger, who ran 20 Costa stores under his franchise Coffee Snobs, including the one in West Street.

The Marlow Free Press contacted Costa for comment - the café in Higginson Park refused and the head office has not yet responded.
