Last week the nostalgia picture montage page looked at local football clubs and showed the Hughenden Rangers team for the 1956/57 season.

That club folded at the end of the 1959/60 season. Reader Keith Barratt has been in touch to tell us that a new Hughenden Rangers FC was registered with the Bucks Football Association in 1967 and entered the Wycombe & District Football League (WDFL) Division 4.

The core of the team were players who had represented the Terriers Boys Club under 16 team, who wanted to move onto more senior football.

They therefore decided to establish a new club. The name Terriers Athletic was already in existence so could not be used.

Hughenden Rangers was chosen at random as the name and then cleared with the Bucks & Berks FA. There was therefore no connection with the previous team of that name.

In their first season 1967/68 the new Rangers played their matches on the Rye and finished runners-up in Division 4 of the Wycombe Combination (WC).

They lost just two matches out of the 26 played, scoring 119 goals with 24 against, and were promoted to Division 3. Then followed two consecutive seasons of promotion into the first division.

After the WC was restructured in 1970, with two Premier divisions being created, the Rangers played in the Premier B division.

In 1973 a further restructuring of the WC took place, with the creation of the Ercol Senior League and a single Premier Division. The club remained in the Premier Division.

1977 was an important year in the club’s history when they moved to “The Common” at Holmer Green (previously the home of Holmer Green FC).

The following year 1978 they changed their name to Penfold Rangers to achieve a more local identity with their new home - Penfold Lane being adjacent to The Common in Holmer Green.

At the end of the 1979/80 season the Rangers were promoted to the prestigious Ercol Senior League.

In 1980 they were finalists in both the Maidenhead Norfolkian Cup and Wycombe Senior Cup. However there was no further league success and the Club reverted to the Premier League in 1981/82. They were wound up 10 years later.

I am indebted to Keith Barrett for the history of this club. He was a founder member, making 505 appearances in their colours.

His 500th appearance was recognised with a presentation of a trophy to him by the club. A mid-fielder, he also scored over 70 goals for the club and was never booked or sent-off! He was also very much involved with the club’s off-field activities, being Secretary for many years. He also served as an officer and management committee member with the Wycombe League.

Keith is planning to organise a reunion celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary. If you are interested, in the first instance call 01494 755070 or email deweymiked@aol.com.
