More than 60 people turned out to celebrate Marlow Bottom WI’s (MBWI) 75th birthday this week, which included the institute’s oldest member, a 102-year-old.

Around 64 people gathered at the Barn Club to celebrate the milestone year, which saw members cut a birthday cake.

MBWI vice president Peri Wing said the celebration was “something to be hugely proud of” since other WI branches have been closing due to “a lack of support and interest”.

She said: “The main Women’s Institute have just celebrated their 102nd birthday, and it is an enormous achievement for us to celebrate our 75th.”

MBWI started in 1942 in a small hut on a plot of land donated by a founder member.

The 80 or so members now meet in the village hall once a month, where members go on outings, enjoy parties, and are treated to talks by specialist speakers.

Peri added: “Just as our founding members had the vision to provide us with a secure future, we need to ensure that we move confidently forward, taking with us the best of the past and embracing new ideas and initiatives.”

Speaking about the party, she said: “It was an enjoyable afternoon of celebration with friends.”
