Town centre closure causes chaos

HIGH Wycombe motorists have been left in traffic chaos after the eastbound carriageway of the A40 Oxford Road was closed.

The six-week closure has been put in place so work on the town's new Sainsbury's store, opposite the Eden development, can continue.

But while diversions have been put in place to guide cars around the work, the traffic lights have not been re-phased to deal with the closure. This means motorists are waiting for lights on the closed road to change.

Former Doctor Who star and Bucks Free Press columnist Colin Baker said the work was "absurd".

"I have just been into Wycombe," he said on Tuesday. "They have closed the road but they haven't changed the phasing of the lights. The lights still stay green to the left and there's no left to go.

"It's just absurd."

Buckinghamshire County Council warned drivers of delays during the closure and asked them to "remain patient".

Best option is to avoid Wycombe altogether - road closures or not. The place is a craphole.

Is it too simple to suggest they turn off the lights for 6 weeks? We all know the traffic flowed much better before they turned them on. No comment from Ivor yet! I guess he is stuck in the queue by Morrisons now.

Everywhere you go in Wycombe the lights seem to have no logical sequence to them what so ever. the queues in town could be reduced dramatically should the council bother to actually get off their back sides and do a survey on them and alter the sequencing. I dont think they do want to though, causing queues gives the government more reason to tax 'gas guzzelers', increase road tax for certain vehicles etc. It is finacially better for them to cause this chaos than to rectify it!!

You would have thought the traffic control boffins would have re-phased the lights!

Even since construction started on “the complex” I have avoided that part of town, so have most other people. The traffic jams in Suffield Road have increased as a result.

We never had any problems until the bus station was moved and the traffic lights installed. Give us the old roundabout back!

Wonderful to see that our "neighbours" in the Chalfonts can contribute such carefully considered, well structured comments about the issues in HW!

Bring back the mini roundabout, it was so much easier, at least everyone eventually gets a turn that way.
