Drivers are being urged to take extra care on the roads tonight after heavy snow caused chaos around the county.

Trains were cancelled, more than 260 schools announced closures and drivers left their cars stranded on the M40.

More schools have announced closures tomorrow (Tuesday) as the cold snap is set to continue tonight with “severely cold” road temperatures predicted.

Transport for Buckinghamshire (TfB) gritters will be out in full force at 6pm tonight and again tomorrow at 4am, it announced this evening.

Crews will be treating footpaths in town centres from first thing tomorrow but TfB is warning of icy conditions and is urging people to take care whether walking or driving.

TfB thanked Bucks residents and businesses who helped its workers to clear areas in front of businesses and homes.

Mark Shaw, Buckinghamshire County Council's deputy leader and transport cabinet member, praised the work of the gritter drivers, saying: “While you may be sleeping, our gritter drivers are out in these horrible conditions trying to make it safer for everyone who needs to travel.

“Our main concern is that some drivers think that salt on the road is a failsafe, yet people still need to drive very carefully and consider if the journey is absolutely necessary.

“We ask that people take extra care as the temperatures drops, as salt becomes less effective under -5 degrees celsius.

“Twenty-five gritters will treat 1,405km of the county’s A and B roads again tonight.

“These are the most important routes to keep everyone moving and comprises approximately 44 per cent of the total network.”
