A car crashed onto the railway tracks in Chinnor this morning - with an eyewitness describing the terrifying moment she heard a "massive bang".

The car is believed to have crashed through a fence on Hill Road and rolled down an embankment onto the tracks at Chinnor Railway Station at around 6am.

Mollie Avery, 21, who lives near the railway bridge, was one of the first on the scene with her mum and brother and described seeing a man crawling out of the vehicle.

She said: "I was in bed and I heard a screech and a massive bang. I didn't know what it was and then I heard my brother on the phone to police downstairs.

"When we got there, the guy had managed to crawl out of the car. He seemed to be ok but had a cut on his head."

Staff at Chinnor and Princes Risborough Heritage Railway (C&PRR) said it was "lucky" that no train was due at the time of the crash.

While there were no passenger trains running today, works trains which run in connection with the Princes Risborough extension were around.

Danny Woodward, chairman of the line said: "Our C&PRR Railway Incident Team arrived on site very quickly - the guys are all either existing or retired senior railway managers - and they immediately set in motion what needed to happen.

"The Office of Rail and Road were informed and we have had the excellent cooperation of the emergency services and Oxfordshire County Council Highways Department.

"A crane is lifting the debris out of the way and our guys will be repairing the damage and making good the track and signalling equipment, which will ensure that thousands of children and their families will get to see Santa on this weekend and beyond."

More information as we get it.
